Manager’s log – Sunday 31st August
The Firsts’ season got underway on a sunny afternoon in Luton. Rallied by new manager Naina’s opening team talk, the game started brightly with good passing and positive movement. But with Luton playing a very physical game (even the indomitable Viv coming off worse for wear!), the midfield took a battering and the Opposition were able to play long balls over the defence and onto goal. Going 2-0 down, just before half-time Hackney managed to get one back with a sweet strike from Kate hitting the top corner.
After changes at the break and a new defensive strategy led by a rock-solid Kat, Hackney looked stronger in the second half – dominating much of the game and playing by far the better football. Unlucky to concede again, the team nevertheless continued to create good chances, with Kate bagging a second goal. Carrying real urgency in the final stages of the game, it looked as if Hackney might get a deserved equaliser. However it wasn’t to be, and the game ended 3-2. Big thanks go to Sharon who valiantly played in goal, and well done to Kate – current top goal-scorer and woman of the match. Hopefully better results to come, but the Firsts opened the season as we mean to go on: positive, determined, and with strong team spirit.
