Hackney Women’s Football Club (HWFC) was founded in 1986. We were the first team run by women in London and Europe's first openly gay team. In those early days, we had nothing but determination and a shared vision of building something extraordinary.
From makeshift training grounds to our first official match, every moment was a testament to the spirit that would define our team for generations to come.
HWFC was the first team to instigate a fair play policy, ensuring that all women are encouraged to train and play competitive football regardless of their skills, age, ethnic origin and sexual orientation.
The founders of this club fought hard for access and representation - often coming up against homophobia and abuse but helped pave the way for change in the game.

We've been playing football since 1986. Currently playing in Tier 6 of the London & South East Regional Women's Football League, over the years, we've had some unforgettable moments.
One such moment is when Hackney played against Arsenal Reserves in the GLWFL Anniversary Cup final in 1989/90. We came through with a 3-2 win, clinching the win in extra time.

Today, we're still committed to our LGBTQ+ spirit. Our legacy is not just about the trophies we've won, but the community we've built and the lives we've touched along the way.
We continue to ensure our club remains a space where all members of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially Trans players, are welcome, valued, and safe.
